Polytunnel gets a new spring in its step

By | 23rd April 2021

They say it takes a village to raise a child. Well, it certainly takes a school to re-cover a polytunnel!

Holy Trinity grounds were a hive of activity last Thursday and Friday as the pupils and staff took on the considerable task of re-covering the polytunnel.

The cover was torn in places and had served us well for the last 15 years, but it was time for a facelift and our fresh, new cover will provide optimum conditions for year-round growing in the polytunnel.

The day began with Ian McGrigor, a Biodiversity and all-round gardening whiz, setting out our task, and some pupils from Mr O’ Grady’s and Mr Downes’s 6th class began digging trenches around the polytunnel to release the cover, securely buried under a foot of clay.

With a lot of hard work, and a “dig-out” from some staff members, we managed to loosen the earth enough to lift the old cover free.

.

We now had to fold the old cover up and get ready to replace it with a fresh one.

Replacing the cover with a new one required everyone to muck-in and lots of teamwork. Luckily we have that skill in spades!

And finally, our lovely, fresh polytunnel! All ready for our Spring seedlings and all the planting we hope to do this year.
